No matter how young we are – at least once in awhile we picture ourselves 10, 20, and even 30 years from today . . .
Do we want our body being hampered by various aches, pains and chronic medical conditions in our future or just a few years from now . . . or we want still be living a physically vigorous and unrestricted lifestyle?
Will our brain and mind still be active and alert — or will we be starting a downhill slide into senility? All of us know that we have quite sad Alzheimer’s and dementia statistics during last decades. Do we want to be a part of these statistics?
It is in our hands and we should take the effort of protecting our future by starting our own Alzheimers disease prevention program. Nobody else has enough motivation to do it for us.
Sure, there are TV commercials advertising various medications for people who were diagnosed with moderate Alzheimer’s but they don’t tell us that these medications are only marginally effective at best and they don’t expect us to pay attention to these medicines’ side effects.
No matter what we want or hope for – protecting our future is our own business. We need to create our own Alzheimers disease prevention plan.
As many of us know, there's no patentable medicine cure for Alzheimers disease prevention from the mainstream medical establishment and there's very little available for patients (and families) that can offer even partial relief from the turmoil it causes. Below you can find information on Holistic Medicine approaches to Alzheimers disease prevention and treatments.
Alzheimers disease prevention is always better than treatment
Obviously, the earlier we start, the greater our chances of avoiding Alzheimer’s disease, but no matter how old we are, our chances of ending our life in an Alzheimer’s disease disaster will decrease dramatically if we take the described below actions - starting today.
You can find below advised by the best holistic doctors steps we can take. These steps are also applicable to a general desire to age healthy and gracefully. They protect us from many diseases and ravages of aging. They are as follows:
* Adapt the healthiest anti aging diet. See our Mediterranean diet page * Try to eat more organic or even better – free range food * Keep your drinking water clean. See our Drinking Water page. * Eliminate refined sugar from your diet! * Avoid all refined foods, and all chemical additives—colorings, preservatives, flavorings, and especially artificial sweeteners * Exercise regularly. See our Fitness page * Help your body to detoxify it. See our Natural Body Cleanse page. * Make sure your Endocrine System is in the best possible shape. * Take care of your Immune System and avoid Autoimmune Diseases. * Use the best pertaining to Alzheimers disease prevention supplements.
Visit our main Alzheimer's disease page for more information on specific for this disease nutrition. You should also visit our Niacinamide and Alzheimers page on a very positive role of this supplement in preventing this devastating disease.

Lithium – one of the best Alzheimers disease prevention supplements
The most knowledgeable holistic doctors suggest that Lithium Supplement can dramatically reduce our risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Very significant evidence from studies mostly during last two decades continues to indicate that natural lithium supplement can not only be a part of our Alzheimers disease prevention program but proven to be a treatment for it also.
Decades of autopsies, x-rays, and brain scans have repeatedly shown that brain shrinks measurably with aging, as we already described on our Brain Anatomy page.
According to a report published in the Lancet, Wayne State University (Detroit) researchers found that lithium has the ability to protect and renew our brain cells.
At least 80% of individuals who took lithium supplement showed an average 3 percent increase in brain grey matter in just four weeks.
Lithium may help generating entirely new cells too - another group of researchers recently reported that lithium also enhances nerve cell DNA replication. DNA replication is the first step in the formation of a new cell of any type.
You can learn more on cells replications by reviewing our Telomeres Theory of aging and Telomeres and Aging pages.
The Wayne State University study used high doses of lithium, but we don’t need to use that amount ourselves, Dr. Johnatan V. Wright, M.D. is suggesting. He is recommending much smaller amounts to his patients who are consistently having very good results.
You can see recommended by Dr. Wright doses below. He is saying that high prescription quantities of lithium just aren't necessary for "everyday" brain cell protection and re-growth. Studies done years ago have shown that very low amounts of lithium can also measurably influence brain functions for the better.
Usually recommended dose for Alzheimer's disease patients is Lithium 10-20 milligrams a day (as well as 1 tablespoon of fish oil). We can try this range of dosages for either Alzheimers disease prevention or treatment.
The Wayne University researchers found that lithium inhibits an enzyme called “GSK-3” - glycogen synthase kinase 3. GSK-3 acts to add phosphate molecules - a process called “phosphorylation” - to a nerve cell structural protein called “tau protein.”
The Phosphorylation is a very common biochemical process active in our bodies. And like any other phosphorylation, tau protein phosphorylation in nerve cells is normal and beneficial to us.
But in Alzheimer’s disease sufferers, phosphorylation of tau protein is significantly over- or hyper—active. That hyper-phosphorylated tau protein then becomes the main component of “neurofibrillary tangles”, which are one of the primary characteristics of the brain cells in Alzheimer’s patients - and aren’t found in normal brain cells.
So, in simple words - lithium supplement prevents the formation of neuro-fibrillary tangles, what helps Alzheimers disease prevention or slowing it down.
The other recent lithium supplement study, published in 2007, was one of the first suggesting that lithium supplement may prevent as well as treat Alzheimer’s disease.
This study demonstrates that there are already clinical trials in humans “evaluating lithium’s abilities to lower tau and beta-amyloid levels in Alzheimer’s patients”. Over-accumulation of “beta-amyloid” is another major obsticle in Alzheimers disease prevention.
Based on previously published considerable animal research work, it’s extremely likely that the outcome of the human clinical trials will be the same - that lithium supplement is an at least partially effective for Alheimers disease prevention and treatment.
But, once again - Alzheimers disease prevention is a much better strategy than trying to treat it after it occurs.
Protecting brain from every-day beating and other unnatural events
Recent research also shows that in addition to boosting brain mass, lithium can protect our brain from the "beating" it gets in the course of everyday life.
Our brain cells are constantly at risk of damage from exposure to all sorts of toxins - even ones produced by our own body. Toxic molecules are formed naturally during the course of normal brain metabolism.
Since these "normal" toxic molecules – usually called "excitotoxins" - are produced every day of our life, eventually they start to wear down or erode away brain mass.
Another well-known cause of brain cells injury is overactivated N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Lithium can inhibit this overactivity. And lithium also increases production of a major brain protective protein called "bcl-2" in both human and animal brain cells.
So it appears that lithium supplement can protect us against normal brain erosion and shrinkage that would otherwise occur over the course of our lives. But lithium also protects the brain from other less "normal" problems too, like damage caused by prescription medications side effects and strokes.
When a clot or other obstruction occurs in a serving the brain blood vessel, it causes a reduction of blood flow to that area. If it is bad enough, the lack of blood flow will cause a stroke and death of brain cells. This type of stroke is known as an ischemic stroke.
Research on experimental animals with deliberately induced ischemic strokes has shown that lithium reduces the areas of cell death.
In one of these studies, researchers blocked a brain artery in rats. Some were pre-treated with lithium for 16 days, the rest weren't. The researchers reported that the lithium-treated rats experienced 56% less cell death and significantly fewer neurologic deficits than the control rats.
It became almost normal that medications prescribed by our mainstream doctors and designed to treat other problems end up having a negative impact - side effects - on the brain. For example, anti-convulsant medications cause abnormal levels of brain cell death.
But lithium supplement significantly protects against this type of cell death - so much so that this effect has been called "robust" - a term scientists use to mean "It really works"!
Of course, lithium treatment, which isn't patentable and doesn't have nearly the profit potential of patented Alzheimer’s medications, hasn't made any headlines. But that doesn't mean it isn't a promising option for patients struggling with Alzheimers disease prevention.
There are many other research findings that also strongly suggest that lithium supplement should be used for Alzheimers disease prevention and slowing the progression of existing cases.
Although Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia aren't technically the same, they do share many of the same degenerative features and there's every reason to expect that natural lithium supplement will help prevent or slow the progression of symptoms of dementia, including age dementia too.
Years of Scientific research show that Lithium supplement may be useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia, and possibly Parkinson’s disease. Lithium not only protects brain cells against normal wear and tear, but also offers additional protection against a whole variety of toxic molecules, including patent medications.
Lithium supplement can also promote brain cell regeneration and increase brain cell mass. In essence, the research suggests that lithium is a brain anti-aging nutrient, in addition to its Alzheimers disease prevention qualities.
A safety of Lithium supplements
You possibly noticed that Lithium supplements are not present in some health Food stores, so you are probably wondering about safety of this supplement.
We think it should be comforting to know that in the 1930s and ’40s, lithium chloride was sold in regular food stores as a salt substitute. But (as it frequently happens with regular salt) some people used way too much of it and suffered toxic overdoses, so it fell out of common use because of that.
Fortunately, lithium toxicity is entirely preventable, and it’s also easily treatable even if it ever does occur.
We should follow instructions on either label on the package, or a knowledgeable physician.
Every advice we included on this page belongs to a low-dosage range of consumption and came either from a very reputable research or from years of its use experience by the best holistic doctors.
According to at least one review article in the British Journal of Addiction, “both controlled and uncontrolled experiments show that symptoms of both alcoholism and affective disturbance are reduced in patients treated with lithium”.
All of the studies reviewed used high dose prescription lithium, but later studies showed that these high doses were not really justified or required.
Holistic doctors suggest that low-dose lithium can be very affective and helpful for both alcoholism and associated mood disorders.
Everybody having these troubles should try Lithium Orotate, 10 milligrams three times daily - along with –
* Healthy Diet * Niacin (follow printed on the label instructions) * Glutamine, and other common good quality supplements.
During recovery period alcoholics should try 5 milligrams Lithium Orotate, three times daily (occasionally more). The majority of these patients report improved mood and decreased desire for alcohol after about six weeks using this lithium therapy.
Direct relatives of alcoholics (parents, children, or siblings) are usually recommended also consider a trial of Lithium Orotate, 5 milligrams two or three times daily, even if they have never noticed a mood problem. This is a completely safe protocol and they can discontinue in six to eight weeks if they don’t feel a difference.
The majority of treated people report positive changes - less depression and irritability for women, and less irritability and “temper” for men.
For people suffering from alcoholism or their families this use of Lithium supplement solution is not any less important than Alzheimers disease prevention or treatment.
Lithium supplement is possibly a solution for symptoms of Fibromyalgia
According to Holistic Medicine Fibromyalgia primarily strikes women and causes debilitating pain and stiffness. Mainstream treatments usually include tranquilizers, antidepressants (assuming that all the symptoms are only in the patient’s head) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These medications only temporarily mask the pain and sleeplessness that often occur.
Lithium supplement can help alleviate the symptoms without any problems associated with above mainstream medicine Fibromyalgia treatments known for their side effects.
At least one study examined three women suffering from Fibromyalgia, none of whom had responded to conventional treatments. When researchers added Lithium to the women’s current treatment, all three noticed a marked reduction in their Fibromyalgia symptoms.
The authors of the study didn’t discontinue patients’ ineffective conventional treatments, because these conventional treatments are the “standard” protocol.
Lithium supplement among natural remedies for gout symptoms
The gout symptoms occur when the body can’t process and eliminate excess uric acid from blood. The result is a painful burning or stabbing sensation usually in the ball joint of the foot.
Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, M.D. have found over the years that a combination of low dose lithium - 10-15 milligrams twice daily) and vitamin C (2 grams twice daily) can be very effective in preventing recurrent attacks of gout.
Vitamin C significantly reduces serum uric acid levels in blood. Lithium makes uric acid more soluble so it doesn’t crystallize into painful “needles”. These two actions combine to significantly reduce gout attacks.
If you have gout, it is also recommended to drink 32 oz. of cherry juice at the first sign of an attack. You just need to make sure it is real – no sugar added – cherry juice.
Although no one knows why or how cherry juice works, studies have shown that cherry juice usually eliminates the pain of acute gout.
