Heart Nutrition for prevention and treatments of Heart Disease

CoenzymeQ10 is a nutrient for our heart nutrition which can save our lives

CoQ10 — this nutrient is a part of ANY heart health related medical study. Our CoQ10 page is addressing Anti Aging properties of it, and this page is about its specific heart disease prevention and treatment benefits.

Science supporting impressive role CoQ10 plays in our heart health

CoQ10 is found in all cells of the body because by Nature’s design it is critical for energy generation in cells, and especially heart cells, which have to work for a lifetime, without any rest.

CoenzymeQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant and has many other beneficial properties, as supported by many studies of heart nutrition. Results of some studies are also presented on our CoQ10 page.

Coenzyme Q10 and primary heart functions

According to a recent review of 1,000 heart-failure patients examined in a number of double-blind, placebo controlled studies, the majority of them had low CoenzymeQ10 levels in the blood and heart muscle, and these numbers fall even further as the disease progresses.

The same review found that majority of these patients experienced a statistically significant improvement in exercise capacity and had reduced hospitalizations for heart-related problems, after the heart nutrition supplementation with CoQ10 started.

One of these studies found that after four months of supplementing with CoQ10, most patients showed a significant improvement in heart functions as measured by -

* Cardiac output
* Pumping capacity - or left ventricular ejection fraction — because the    left ventricle is the heart’s main pumping chamber
* Amount of blood in one contraction - stroke volume index

Coenzyme Q10 and improved physical workload

They also had a 25 percent improvement in exercise duration and a 14 percent improvement in workload. These results of improved heart nutrition are considered being of a very high significance.

At least one of studies examined only patients with the worst cases of heart failure - they were on the heart transplant waiting list.

Heart failure patients and CoQ10

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers found that most patients experienced a significant improvement in the six-minute walk test and a decrease in shortness of breath, even though their heart studies did not improve.

In two other long-term studies researchers verified if these CoQ10 heart nutrition benefits last long periods. In one such study 424 patients using CoQ10 were followed for eight years.

The doses were ranging from 75 to 600 milligrams a day depending on the patient’s clinical condition. They measured patients’ CoQ10 blood levels to make sure it was actually absorbed.

In this long-term study, it was found that the responding patients had dramatic improvements in objective heart parameters — left ventricular wall thickened and ejection fraction improved in addition to other improvements.

Before the CoQ10 was used by patients in this study, the average patient was taking up to five cardiac drugs.

After CoQ10 therapy, 43 percent of the patients were able to stop up to three drugs. Not a good news for most pharmaceutical companies!

Another long-term study using 100 milligrams a day of CoQ10 found that 67 percent showed definite clinical improvements - they were -

* less tired
* more active
* shortness of breath at rest disappeared
* their heart rate normalized
* while their enlarged heart returned to a more normal size.

When patients stopped taking CoQ10, they rapidly got worse. Returning to CoQ10 restored their improved health.

Ubiquinol - an improved form of CoQ10

The form of the CoQ10 also was found to be of critical importance, especially in the overweight patients.

CoQ10 exists in two basic forms — ubiquinone (a traditional form of CoQ10) and ubiquinol – you can see more on this product on our CoQ10 page. The most functional form of CoQ10 is ubiquinol, which is better absorbed by our digestive system.

In one recent study, researchers found that patients with the worst cases of heart failure could not absorb CoQ10 (ubiquinone) even at 900 milligrams a day, probably because of gut wall edema and poor oxygenation of the blood in the gut interfered with absorption.

When the patients were tested on the ubiquinol, their CoQ10 blood levels dramatically rose, and their heart function tests also significantly improved.

Interesting, most of the above studies were using CoQ10 alone, with no other supplements, as any drugs’ studies would be performed.

Other common heart nutritional deficiencies

CoQ10 is just one of many nutrients which heart disease patients were found to be deficient with.

The researchers found CoQ10 being of such significance that it was used alone in most of the above studies. Various other studies demonstrated that patients with a diseased heart have a great number of other nutritional deficiencies, including -

* selenium
* zinc
* magnesium
* L-carnitine
* vitamin B-1
* riboflavin
* glutathione, and
* niacinamide.

We should use every opportunity to verify any deficiencies of nutrients on the above list, while visiting our doctors.

We can find the above nutrients in a supplement form in many good Health Food Stores.
