If you ask most people today what causes heart disease, nine times out of ten you would hear “cholesterol.” In fact, most doctors will give you the same answer. But they’re all wrong.
In recent years, it has become more and more notorious in the public mind that taking everything from statin pills to statin drugs containing breakfast spreads is beneficial to everybody’s health - thanks to Big Pharma's aggressive TV ad campaigns.
On the other hand there is no sufficient or practically any evidence that it can be actually beneficial to our health.
But studies show that taking statins - high cholesterol symptoms reducing medications - can negatively affect performance of our brain and other body’s organs because of their well researched side effects.
All of us are surrounded by aged people who are suffering memory problems, reduced alertness and reaction. Many of them are taking these so popular lately statin drugs. These are FDA approved cholesterol medications. Insurance is paying for them, so why not to take advantage?
Among other side effects statin drugs are also proven to deplete very important for our heart health nutrients.
Too little cholesterol negatively affects aging health
Also - too little cholesterol damages cellular health, disrupts our hormone production, and drains our libido. Not too bad for insurance paid medications? No wonder we have the highest healthcare costs in the world.
When people take high cholesterol symptoms reducing statins, they get lower test numbers. But, they trade in their –
* energy * exercise tolerance * libido * muscle tone, and * their heart’s energy-producing capacity, as a part of the deal. Obviously, many people don’t know these tiny details but their doctors are supposed to know. Some doctors even suggesting that above symptoms are signs of high cholesterol.
Cholesterol test numbers should become higher as we age
Our mainstream medicine promotes acceptable high cholesterol symptoms test numbers the same for people of any age, while there is a scientific proof that they should become higher as we age.
One of the latest studies at Texas A&M University showed that people taking statin drugs had lower muscle gain than those who were not.
What causes high cholesterol test results?
Elevated Cholesterol, Triglycerides and Lp(a) levels are relatively easy preventable primary signs of even sub-clinical disorders. They are among other high cholesterol symptoms mentioned on the Thyroid Gland Page.
A number of studies show, that as much as 10 percent of middle-aged women have sub-clinical hypothyroidism. At least one study found that it was two to three times more common in people with high cholesterol symptoms (numbers) and vice verse.
It is known that treating hypothyroidism usually also corrects high LDL. The greatest effect is seen in people with the highest levels - greater than 250 mg/dl.
Any such successful treatment which is lowering LDL (bad) levels, also lovers triglyceride levels and the chylomicron remnant fraction - all considered to contribute to the heart condition atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
Even the National Cholesterol Education Program, the official medical source of such information, states that hypothyroidism is the leading cause of elevated LDL levels, but few doctors seem to know that.
We all expect our doctors to know what causes high cholesterol, instead of suggesting us switching to low cholesterol foods, in addition to taking statin drugs.
Studies show that low thyroid function also elevates levels of another risk factor called lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), which is not lowered by statin drugs. Correcting thyroid function instead in fact lowers Lp(a) levels.
Don’t be surprised if your mainstream cardiologist is telling you that controlling Lp(a) is impossible. You can visit our Vitamin C page for information on managing your Lp(a) levels, in addition to normalizing our thyroid gland performance.
You should visit our Thyroid Gland and Thyroid Testing pages to see if you need to improve your thyroid condition and which supplements would help doing that.
What else science is reporting on high cholesterol symptoms?
Important to note again that there are NO serious studies confirming a convincing link between high cholesterol symptoms - levels and increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. There is also no such link with even the lesser, sub-clinical form of hypothyroidism.
Several major studies referred to by prestigious medical journals also found NO such connection.
For example, a study reported in the 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) followed more than 2,500 people for 12 years found NO difference in the incidence of coronary artery heart disease, strokes or cerebrovascular deaths between those with normal thyroid function and those who were hypothyroid.
More important factors leading to our cardiovascular problems
It seems not directly related, but a Korean study found a similar result but also noted that those with coronary artery disease had a greater degree of abdominal fat, which is well known being strongly linked to cardiovascular disease. This is possibly another reason of what causes high cholesterol.
The belly fat makes the crucial difference. The risk is abdominal obesity and insulin resistance - see Inflammation Page - in people with hypothyroidism, even if it is sub-clinical.
People who are hypothyroid known to exercise less, gain fat faster, have more difficulty removing the fat, and eat more - mainly because they are depressed - high-carbohydrate foods like bread than people whose thyroid glands function normally.
See our Anti Aging Diet page. It suggests an example of healthy low cholesterol foods.
To conclude - if your doctor tells you that you have elevated any of above signs, insist on finding if hypothyroidism is a factor.
