A risk of radiation poisoning from nuclear fallout over the USA becomes more real day-by-day

What is the radiation poisoning we should be prepared for

Most of us are following nuclear tragedy in Japan on a radio and TV and every new event there makes most of us concerned with raising possibilities of a radiation and contamination in our environment.

It is moving towards our (USA) country. A risk of nuclear fallout and contamination of the Pacific Ocean water along our shores becomes more real day-by-day. There is a possibility that we will have to deal with the radiation poisoning and we better be prepared for that.

All of us are concerned with radiation poisoning and looking for ways to be prepared to protect ourselves if the radiation poisoning from Japan’s earthquake and nuclear meltdown come to our lives.

Washington Post on March 14, 2011 stated:

"The psychological effects were the biggest health effects of all — by far," said Fred Mettler, a University of New Mexico professor emeritus and one of the world's leading authorities on radiation poisoning, who studied Chernobyl for the World Health Organization. "In the end, that's really what affected the most people."

Most businesses selling personal gauss meters and other personal radiation poisoning detection devices are reporting a massive increase in sales and many suppliers are out of stock.

We created this website to help our guests to stay healthy; and being concerned with their well being, among other major health issues decided to research and publish this very basic information on the radiation poisoning. Obviously, we hope this page would never become useful for anybody.

The radiation poisoning experts are suggesting us to start taking Potassium Iodide as a solution to a possible radiation exposure. They are saying that a combination of these two nutrients provides a necessary protection.

According to this advice the Potassium is supposed to protect us from radioactive cesium.

The Iodide is suposed to protect us against radioactive Iodine.

We decided to share with you what we learned from the most experienced holistic doctors on effectiveness of these two nutrients for radioactive poisoning protection.

What should we know about Potassium Iodide

We can find many suppliers offering Potassium Iodide on the net. We can probably find the product also in some local health food stores. Unfortunately all these products are not what would efficiently protect us. There is also some indication of certain fake products on the market. We need to use only known to us and reputable suppliers.

Not any less important that these products don’t have nearly enough potassium to protect us against the radioactive cesium.

The idea of having potassium for our protection is based on the fact that it acts in the body like the radioactive cesium does. So having a sufficient amount of potassium in the body is supposed to prevent our body from absorbing the cesium.

We already mentioned on our heart health page that a majority of Americans are so deficient in potassium that the amount of it in most available on the market potassium iodide products can’t protect us. The only choice we have is to look for powdered potassium supplement, so we can increase the dose for our protection.

Iodide in these supplements is supposed to protect our thyroid in case of radiation. The problem is that other parts of our body also require protection.

Iodide is a form of iodine and as we already mentioned on our Thyroid Gland page many of us are deficient in iodine and our thyroid gland will take all the iodide from the supplement to reduce this deficiency. If it still remains deficient, the radioactive iodine would also be consumed and it gets poisoned by it.

Iodide and iodine serve different organs in our body and in different ways. The other organs, like our breasts and other mostly fatty tissues will get any iodide from this supplement only if our thyroid gland didn’t consume all of it. These other organs and tissues will get poisoned with the radioactive iodine in this case.

We hope it never happens but in the event of nuclear fallout as a result of Japan’s earthquake, it’s vital we protect our body with both nutrients.

On the other hand the following is also very alarming:

Poison Control Centers have already received several cases of iodide over-exposure at the time of this writing…

MSNBC reported that two of these cases suffered more serious symptoms such as vomiting, racing heart and vertigo (dizziness), adding that:

"Panic could spark a "mini-epidemic" of potassium iodide ingestion and overdoses, predicted Dr. Leonard Wartofsky, spokesman for the Endocrine Society and a thyroid expert.

He warned that the drug could cause serious reactions in some people and even backfire in the case of an actual emergency, putting people past a two-week window of safe dosage. After that period of time, the drug can induce severe hypothyroidism, a condition that essentially shuts down thyroid function.

According to the CDC:

"Newborn infants (less than 1 month old) who receive more than one dose of KI (potassium Iodide) are at particular risk for developing a condition known as hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone levels that are too low). If not treated, hypothyroidism can cause brain damage.

Infants who receive potassium iodide should have their thyroid hormone levels checked and monitored by a doctor. Avoid repeat dosing of potassium iodide to newborns."

What are the real radiation poisoning solutions

At least one of the best products, containing sufficient amounts of both nutrients, suggested by the most knowledgeable holistic doctors is Iodoral.

One tablet of Iodoral contains a potent 12.5 mg of iodine/iodide.

Alternatively, we can use a Lugol’s solution, which is the liquid form of Iodoral. Two drops of this iodine/iodide product is equivalent to one Iodoral.

Most of us should take one capsule Iodoral daily, just for general nutritional purposes. After a few weeks, our thyroid should be sufficient in iodine and iodide, making our organs more resistant to radioactive iodine.

If we learn that there’s a significant risk of radioactive iodine exposure, we can double or triple the dose in the short run.

Regardless of whether radiation from Japan’s nuclear facilities comes this way or not, these are great products to take on a regular basis.

The powdered potassium as well as either of the above two products are readily available on the Internet. They each protect different organs in different ways.

The good news is that in all likelihood this Japan’s nuclear meltdown is NOT a serious threat to our health as of this time.

The even better news is that the attention this has brought to focus has highlighted the fact that 19 out of 20 people are deficient in iodine, but have toxic levels of a toxin bromide (from pesticides and other sources), which could lead to thyroid impairment, breast and prostate cancers.

Fortunately this is easily remedied with sources of supplemental iodine.

Dr. Brownstein recommends about 12.5 mg every day, which is about what the Japanese typically would consume in their diet and this is exactly what recommended above supplements provide.

He believes this will provide about 95 percent of the protection that the 130 mg one-time adult dose that is currently recommended by public health authorities for radiation protection and prophylactic.
